Is God here in the wild lands
Where the ache of abandonment begins
And the blueness of the sky ends?
Is God here in the rubble
And deserted grandeur
Of this ancient life that I live?
Is God here where I stumbled
Where I fell wearily
Where the rain is my only companion?
Is God here where I dance
With the specters of magnificence
Untouched by human hands?
Is God here where the stardust whispers
And the sweet gray clouds
Lay like a cloak upon my skin?
Is God here where the earth is cracked
Under the weight of heaven
Highlighting my broken places within?
Beloved, Beloved, Beloved!
I call upon your Name
Swirling through the windstorm
The blizzard
The tempest of shame

Profound and lovely. Reading Heschel and knowing more that God is in the questions more than our limited “answers”. Your poem rang true for me. Thank you.

I love this part the most: Is God here where the stardust whispers/ And the sweet gray clouds/ Lay like a cloak upon my skin? I know God is here always. Your words help me remember with gratitude the times I have reached out into the dark, through the gray clouds and God was there.

Thank you for sharing!!.. I am not into religion myself, believe one can believe in whatever they wish to…. perhaps Mr. Bennett said it best; “Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart.” ( Roy T. Bennett )… also I believe there is a saying; “God promised you a safe landing, he did not say the journey would be a smooth one”… 🙂
Until we meet again..
May flowers always line your path
and sunshine light your way,
May songbirds serenade your
every step along the way,
May a rainbow run beside you
in a sky that’s always blue,
And may happiness fill your heart
each day your whole life through.

MW, this is quite profound and poignant. For those with faith in some entity or spiritual essence, it is easy to be tested when you “stumble”or have the “ache of abandonment.” Yet, those are the times we need that guidestone the most.
From the excellent book “Habit” by Charles DuHigg, he cites data that reveals alcoholics are more successful with Alcoholic Anonymous if they have faith. The author of the study noted the faith in something more than yourself enabled the alcoholic to recover from their addiction.

A profound question that provokes some thought provoking thoughts. Our rational mind fights hard to defend itself whereas we have emotions and beliefs they play thier part and do so deeply, we get mired in between and hence many of us do and some of us think otherwise. There is no right or perfect answer to such a question, we can ponder and we can have our own set of answers to convince our mind. There are limitation to what our mind can comprehend given the complexity and vastness of the reality. We are constantly challenged and we keep evolving and it has taken billions of years to be here and develop that ability to think in a much more advance manner but we haven’t come close enough to address the question, and it will continue to remain, keep puzzling and keep nagging us perhaps forever…thanks for posing a stimulating thought and the poem captures it all so well.
