North Country Love and Legend

img_2770

specter of death along a deserted road
the demise of autumn’s reap and sow

ghostly branches of barren trees
eerie hushed babble of glacial streams

icy claws clinging to niveous graves
townspeople gathered in a shadowed nave

the shivery blush of a winter kiss
frostbitten petals of bitter cold bliss

long hair adorned with icicles
crystalline footprints in the snow

waning light of a gibbous moon
north wind howling a song of doom

frozen in time she awaited his return
upon the hearth they placed her urn

Cheers to dVerse Poet’s Pub and bard, Bjorn. We are prompted to be inspired by the song-writing imagery of Bob Dylan. I chose the “Girl From The North Country” as my inspiration. Didn’t you wonder what happened to her? Now you know! Dylan lyrics below:

If you’re traveling the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
For she once was a true love of mine.

If you go when the snowflakes storm
When the rivers freeze and summer ends
Please see if she has a coat so warm
To keep her from the howlin’ winds.

Please see if her hair hangs long
If it rolls and flows all down her breast
Please see for me if her hair’s hanging long
For that’s the way I remember her best.

I’m a-wonderin’ if she remembers me at all
Many times I’ve often prayed
In the darkness of my night
In the brightness of my day.

So if you’re travelin’ the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was the true love of mine

  1. Awesome poem, MW. A whole story in there with a sad ending. Thanks too for the Dylan lyrics. The first concert I ever went to was Dylan, Baez and Mitchell. I had no idea at the time what an iconic trio that was. Thanks for the memories 🙂

      1. Yes I’ve heard that, but the background often alludes me in the presence of art or things that directly affects me and my own personal experiences. So, yes to your question. 🙂

  2. Hi Mother Wintermoon, I hope all is well with you, I love Bob Dylan, and have a lot of his music, I had his complete lyrics, but some one borrowed it and never gave it back (weeding the collection?) He is an indispensable part of later 20th and early 21st century culture, so it is good that he won this award. Loved your poem that bounced off his lyric. Best wishes and blessings, Charles.

    1. Oh man, bummer about someone ripping you off for your set of Dylan lyrics. I think it’s pretty groovy that he won. I have many Dylan favorites. Thank you for commenting. Hope you’re feeling better. Peace, love and chocolate, MW

      1. Some day (you know the one that never comes) I will find another copy and buy it. In the meantime it made room for another book, I call lending books, weeding the collection, but it always seems to be the ones one most wants are the ones that disappear! I am also pleased that he won, I think he totally deserved it, there are few others who have moved a society the way he has, and so what if Jodi Picoult thinks she could be awarded a Grammy, she totally wouldn’t deserve it! Best wishes, blessings, ahug and yes some chocolate; why not. Charles. 🙂

  3. I love the pairing of these symbiotic stories, as she awaits in the post harvest cold winter and he seeks to make sure she is comforted and wonders if she remembers him.

  5. I love that song – not many people know it – and I love your interpretation – chilly! I particularly like the lines:
    ‘icy claws clinging to niveous graves’;

‘the shivery blush of a winter kiss
    frostbitten petals of bitter cold bliss’;

    and

‘waning light of a gibbous moon
north wind howling a song of doom’.
